¹ As he raises the Gospel and says these words, the priest conveys to the devout the message: The Holy Gospels represent Christ, the true divine wisdom (I Cor. 1, 24), which is why the reading should be treated with respect and standing up straight.

¹ The hymn Come let us worship includes a line which can be either of these two variants: a) risen from the dead—which is only sung on Sundays, i.e. the day that the Lord Christ has resurrected; b) glorious amongst the Saints—which is sung in the other days of the week, which are dedicated to the Saints. ¹ The Cherubic Hymn was introduced into the celebration of the Liturghy during the time of Emperor Justin the First (518–527). In this hymn, the devout are compared to the angels in Heaven, which praise the Holy Trinity in doxologic (worshipful) hymns. It also urges those who hear it towards a deeper spiritual living by renouncing all kinds of worries that are tied to the material, worldly life.

¹ The Axion Estin (from Greek axios—worthy) is a hymn dedicated to the Holy Virgin, which voices the veneration of Christians for the Theotokos. The first part, It is truly meet..., is of angelic origin and was revealed to a monk from Mount Athos (tenth century), and the second part, More honourable than..., is the composition of the hymn writer Cosma of Maiuma (eighth century).
